HOUSE M.D.

House M.D is a medical drama, produced by Bryan Singer (of Usual Suspects, X-Men and Superman Returns fame) originally aired on Fox. It has also been in syndication around the world in various networks. In India, AXN airs the show . Before getting banned, AXN-India was airing the second season. So, for those who haven’t watched it yet, they might want to catch up with the DVD of the first season and of course, read this post to get an idea of the show!

House M.D. revolves around Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant doctor who specializes in infectious diseases and works in the department of Diagnostic Medicine of the fictitious Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. He handles cases that other doctors haven’t been able to figure out. So basically, cases of rare or unusual diseases get referred to him. He recruits three fellows who assist him in his diagnosis. Dr. Lisa ‘Cuddy’ is his boss who runs affairs in the hospital, while his good friend Dr. Wilson also figures prominently. The show involves Dr House along with his fellows, doctors Eric Foreman, Allison Cameron and Robert Chase, analyzing medical cases, and each episode usually deals with a different case. The novelty element in the show stems from its treatment of each medical case as some kind of mystery and the way they go about solving it.

Of course, I really haven’t revealed anything so far if I haven’t mentioned the protagonist at length. Undoubtedly, the show’s major draw has been Dr. House and his life. In a role played with such ease by Hugh Laurie, one would find it hard to believe he is actually British who speaks with an American accent. As a side bit of trivia, when producer Bryan Singer was casting, he wasn’t aware of Laurie’s British roots and was later astonished by his flawless American accent. His eyes and subtle change in facial expressions, that can range from expressing extreme cynicism to a hint of pain, are magnetic. Hugh Laurie was previously a popular comedian in the UK, best known for his comedy series with Stephen Fry which included shows like ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie‘ and ‘Jeeves and Wooster‘. However the intensity of his role on House is a total contrast to anything that he’s played earlier in his career, and that further highlights the fact that he has won two consecutive Golden Globe awards for best Actor for his role in House M.D. The character House, is totally unlike the stereotypical heroic doctor. He hates people and especially hates patients. He constantly spells out his philosophy that patients always lie, which is frequently referenced throughout the series as one of the key ways of solving cases. He treats patients diseases as interesting problems that need to be solved, and this ability of his to objectify patients’ illnesses, enables him to make tough decisions, some of which might border on the controversial. Due to some untreatable ailment which resulted in the crippling of one of his legs, he uses a cane to walk around and develops an addiction to painkillers (that actually help him control his excruciating pain and help him do his daily work).

The show also has sub plots that involve the other characters and how they affect Dr. House’s life, and his relationships with them, which make for a compelling series. The personal life story arcs come about in the sidelines while the medical cases take center stage. Although, one does tend to get glued to the show due to the interesting plots. The other members of the cast also do a great job, giving out solid performances in the process. Dr. Wilson is his constant companion and one of his few true friends who also at times, tries to serve as his conscience. Dr. Lisa Cuddy tries to do the unenviable job of covering House’s eccentricities while trying to maintain a semblance of sanity in the workings of the hospital.

All in all, a must see. Even if one is not terribly impressed with a soap opera-ish look to the plots in general, the intelligently written medical parts is very engaging and is a good entry point for those averse to medical drama. The Third season airs on AXN,probably Saturdays at 1:00pm,dont miss this awesome show, its one of my favs, however if you haven't seen the earlier episodes , it would be advisable to catch it on DVD to be up to speed with the show.

EXTENSION CHANGER

Indeed the best things in life are free.I am recently come across this open source software called Extension Changer. It is a small and simple program that can change the extension of multiple files in one go. Just drag and drop the file into the form or choose the new right-click option in the Windows Explorer context menu. This is a very useful program which can easily edit the extensions of many files. This can be used to repair files with unkown extensions and also hide files with confidential data.Suppose you want to prevent someone from accessing a .txt document. You can change the extension .txt to .jpeg ie. rendering the file inaccessible and corrupt unless the extension is corrected. The best thing about this program is that its completely open source and very lightweight.Heres the download link.

WINDOWS 7

It’s no secret; vista has been a complete disaster since its first launch. Microsoft is trying hard to lure millions of XP users with a whole new experience of a new & better OS. Although times are not favorable for Microsoft with new flavors of Linux and OS X leaping ahead with time, Microsoft needs to do some kudos miracle. I managed to use one of the early pre-beta versions on windows 7, to be more specific I used Windows 7 ultimate (build-6801) version. Although the
release date claimed by Microsoft is in the mid 2010 but with high expectations running we might be able to see a late 2099 release for win 7. Who knows? May be it will be New Year gift from Microsoft to all XP-phobic fans. Here is an exclusive look at the os we all might upgrade to next year. In plain words what I experienced was that windows 7 was a lot faster and stable than vista. Microsoft seemed to have reduced the windows 7 boot time significantly by turning off many rather useless services. Mr. Steve Ballmer, CEO Microsoft said in the ITxpo, Orlando that-“Windows 7 will be vista but a whole lot better.”

PERFORMANCE:-
Inspite of the fact that windows seven is being built on the same base code as that of vista, team
Microsoft is trying hard to speed-up the boot time and in turn reduce the number of startup services. The OS has also been designed to be able to take advantage of newer technologies such as solid state dives (SSDs). We can only keep our fingers crossed and hope that those improvements will be better than the improvements that windows vista service pack 1 provided us. But I found a significant problem with the build that I tested, after installing windows 7 everything worked fine and there were no BSODs,but after using it for 4-5 days windows was unable to find the driver for both of my ATAPI DVD-RW driver for neither of my drives. I tried hard to somehow feed into it the driver but the only solution I had was to download the driver from the net and for people who do not have access to the web will be having just one option left i.e. to reinstall windows. But again after installing the driver and using the OS for 7-8 days again the same problem persisted, but last time I had backed up the driver in mu pen-drive
and so I could install it again. But I am sure that this problem has already been solved by the time you read this.

INTERFACE:-
In one of the few early public demonstrations of windows 7, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, showed off or rather boasted about its use of multitouch technology similar to that of Microsoft’s surface table computer. The windows taskbar is completely redesigned. There are no tabs with text-labels of the program running, instead the applications are docked as icons and are visible even when they are not running. This behavior mimics that of OS x dock to an extent but is more confusing because it duplicates the function of the quick launch bar which is still next to it, also a niche feature is that dragging a window to either side of the screen makes a vertical tile half the screen wide and dragging a windows towards or away from the top of the screen minimizes or restores it. The sidebar is gone and gadgets can sit anywhere. The display properties dialog box is totally refreshed with a new theme chooser and options for sound. Also the ribbon interface that made its debut in office 2007 will be a feature of many windows 7 apps. Such as the WordPad, paint, etc.

APPLICATIONS:-
Many traditional windows accessories and apps that were bundled in vista such as windows mail,
windows DVD maker, Windows movie maker, etc. will not be available in the standard windows 7
installation instead users have an option of downloading web-based windows live apps. But Microsoft should have included the simple and easy to use windows movie maker for budding editors. Windows media player moves up to version 12. A semi-transparent screen with overlaid controls is easier to use, with improved high-def codec support. The new [win]+[tab] shortcut allows user to toggle between projector and secondary display. A all new application is the windows power shell v2 which is a command line scripting interface designed to help with system administration. The control panel has been reorganized. The new default view is laid out quite logically, but the complete list of options is large enough to drive anyone insane. The explorer has a cleaner overall look. The humble calculator gains a unit converter, statistics helper and can also help out with loan payments and fuel mileage.

FINAL WORDS:-
With Windows vista not being one of the most successful chapter in Microsoft’s history, no matter whatever the hell of magic is done to vista it would remain vista. So, all you XP users out there thinking of upgrading to Vista wait for a few more months and upgrade to windows seven, I am, pretty much sure that it will prove to be a good bet for you.

CREATIVE SBS A300

LIKE TELEVISION OR CINEMA, OUR PC IS A UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT DEVICE. OUR MONITORS ARE RAPIDLY CHANGING FROM CRTs TO LCDs TO HD READYs, AND THE GRAPHICS CARD? AAH! IT SEEMS TO EVOLVE EVERYMONTH! WE ALL SPEND A HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY ON OUR VISUAL DEVICES BUT IT IS THE AUDIO DEVICES THAT AREGETTING NEGLECTED. BUT I THOUGHT ENTERTAINMENT IS A COMPLETE AUDIO-VISUALEXPERIENCE PERHAPS THAT HAS CHANGED NOW. FOR GETTING THE BEST OUT OF YOUR HOME PC YOU NEED TO LOOK NO FURTHER THAN AN USUAL 2.1 SPEAKER CONFIGURATION, UNLESS YOU ARE AN AKA AUDIOPHILE. THE 2.1 CONFIGURATION IS SIMPLE AND CONSISTS TWO STEREO SPEAKERS AND A SUBWOOFER. THE INCLUSION OF SUB-WOOFER HERE MAKES THE 2.1 SYSTEM FAR SUPERIOR TO THE 2.0 SYSTEM WHICH DOES NOT HAVE A SUB-WOOFER. THE MARKET LEADERS IN 2.1 SYSTEMS ARE JBL, CREATIVE, LOGITECH, BOSE, and ALTEC LANSING. BUT WHILE SELECTING A SPEAKER SYSTEM ALWAYS TRY TO GO FOR A WOODEN SUB-WOOFER AS IT OFFERS AN EXTRA PUNCH.

THE SPEAKER SYSTEM WE ARE REVIEWING HERE IS THE CREATIVE SBS A300. AT FIRST LOOK THIS SYSTEM LOOKS LIKE AN ORDINARY 2.1 SYSTEM WITH A SUB-WOOFER AND 2 SATELLITE SPEAKERS ALL IN BLACK COLOUR. BUT AFTER YOU PLUG IT ON, THE SIMILARITY WITH OTHER 2.1 SYSTEMS END. INSTALLING IT IS A BREEZE NO TECH-KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED. YOU JUST PLUGIN THE ONE SINGLE 3.5MM RCA CABLE WHICH IS GREEN IN COLOUR INTO YOUR PC's SPEAKER SLOT AND THEN CONNECT THE POWER CABLE. ONE SPEAKER IS CONNECTED TO THE SUBWOOFER AND IS NOT DETACHABLE AND THE OTHER IS CONNECTED TO THE SUB-WOOFER WITH A DETACHABLE CABLE. MANY USERS MAY FIND THE NON-DETACHABLE SPEAKER A BIT ANNOYING BECAUSE THE CABLE LENGTH IS A BIT SHORT. THE CONTROLS ARE VERY SIMPLE. THE FIRST SPEAKER HOUSES THE ON-OFF CUM VOLUME KNOB IN ITS SIDE WHICH IS VERY EASILY REACHABLE AND THERE IS ALSO A GREEN LED LIGHT. THE ONLY NEGATIVE POINT OF THIS SYSTEM THAT I FOUND WAS THE PLACEMENT OF THE BASS-LEVEL CONTROL KNOB WHICH IS PLACED BEHIND THE SUB-WOOFER AND IS VERY ANNOYING TO REACH FOR.

THE BUILD QUALITY IS EXCELLENT. THE SUB-WOOFER IS A 25*15.5 CM WOODEN CUBE WITH TWO BASS OUTLETS, ONE ON THE FRONT AND THE OTHER ON THE SIDE. THE BASS DELIVERED BY THIS SYSTEM IS EXTREME. THE GLOSSY BLACK SATELLITES ARE SLIM AND COVERED WITH A BLACK MESH. THE WOOFER DELIVERS AN EXCELLENT AND DEEP BASS AND THE SATELLITES ARE AN EXPERT IN PRODUCING MID-RANGE AND HIGH FREQUENCIES. THE SOUND BEGINS TO DISTORT ONLY ON INCREASING THE VOLUME LEVEL ABOVE 85%. BUT AT RS.1,489 THIS SYSTEM IS WORTH EVERY SINGLE PENNY. IT ALSO DELIVERS AN OUTPIT OF 21 RMS. ANY MUSIC LOVER AND CASUAL GAMERS READING THIS JUST GO FOR THIS KINDA COOL SYSTEM.

BUILD QUALITY 4/5
FEATURES 3/5
PERFORMANCE 4½/5
ERGONOMICS 3½/5
WARRANTY 3/5
VALUE FOR MONEY 5/5
OVERALL RATING 4/5
